    DUDE!!! THE PROMISE!! I'm 56 (born Dec 67). In 79/80 I watched The Promise and Yanks with my Mom. We used to watch movies together, then decide if my 3 younger brothers would be able to see them. My Dad was stationed in Korea that year.... And my Mom and I got very tight. The Promise and Yanks were our all time favorites! So good! I loved the majority of the films you mentioned (thank God for HBO back then) , but I saw Lady in Red alone cuz I crushed on PSM, also loved Silent Partner, but eventually my favorite from that year was The Great Santini.....BAR NONE!! It failed, they put it on HBO with a different title "The Ace," then rereleased it in theaters with the original title... and it garnered many nominations! I would love to talk movies with you!

    Listened to pass the time but found this quietly moving. Found myself wishing Q had commented on each and every film (maybe pioneer UA-cam extras featurette?) Appreciated his offhanded affection for films like More American Graffiti which I figured I enjoyed only because of the anticipation and theater experience and now look forward to revisiting without shame. Brief Annie Hall recap: totally identify - that melancholy ending permeated my adolescence, still resonates with every passing happy-sadness. Thanks for this!

    I respect the hell out of Tarantino, and love his movies. But, his opinion...is just his OPINION. I bought a movie he said he loved, and it was just meh...a watered down gang flick (The Outfit). For him to say he thinks Rocky II is better than Rocky I shows he has a very skewed view of movies and entertainment. He's TOTALLY WRONG!

    LOL!! The Shiksa says can't pronounce one of our greatest novelists, Chaim Potok (like when they pronounc CHANUKAH, as if the CH were CHAIN. To be fair, the guttural back of the throat sound is not easy for many non-Jews. HINT: when in doubt, just use the H sound instead.

    ROCK & ROLL HIGH SCHOOL was a "big hit"?! No it was not. I love THE RAMONES and the movie is a lot of fun but it was in no way a "big hit" in 1979. It played at midnight movie showings and was gone. If anything it grew in stature on cable TV.

    I was 10 in 1979 and I definitely saw quite a few of these in the theater. Good memories. Meteor was the one that is quite forgettable but I do remember the trailer: “It’s 5 miles wide and it’s gonna hit!”.

    • @redadamearth
      @redadamearth 7 днів тому

      Not mine. I'm Gen-X and I always enjoy his films for what they are - but there's very little in the way of genuine feeling in them; they're exercises in genre and for the most part, very surface, visceral experiences. Even in his dialogue, which is always fun to listen to - he doesn't reveal himself at all. Don't get me wrong, I love his films - but for my money, Paul Thomas Anderson is the greatest filmmaker of my generation and is doing much deeper, more probing, artistically satisfying and emotional work. From "Punch Drunk Love" to "There Will Be Blood" to "The Master" to "Phantom Thread" to "Licorice Pizza" to whatever his new film will be - for my own taste, he has it over Tarantino and takes a lot more risks as a writer and director. Tarantino - for all of his talent - has basically been making the exact same movie since "Reservoir Dogs". Even "Inglorious Basterds", which I think was his best film, ended up copping out of the themes it teased at and ended up just being an action genre film in the end. He just can't stop winking. I keep waiting for him to grow up and get out of the video store - but he just never has. Again, not saying his films are bad at all - I love them - but they never rise above a certain level for me. To me, I see Tarantino as Hitchcock - he's a brilliant genre filmmaker - but Anderson is Kubrick. Both are terrific for what they do - but for my personal taste, I prefer Anderson's work.

    I'm glad to hear he's such a fan of "Rocky II." By today's standards, some of the scenes are a little cheesy (i.e., running across Philly with all the kids following him), but there is some amazing character development in that movie. I use it in my English classes all the time.

    Psycho II is one of those movies that nobody ever talks about, but it's way better than it has any right to be. Psycho didn't need a sequel and it sounds like a terrible idea... But somehow it manages to be amazing and make you empathize with Norman Bates after the horrible stuff he did in the original film.

    Overrated, DEI film. People are cowed into heaping praise onto films by black film makers. If you criticize any film by a black director, you run the risk of being branded as a racist. That "Black Panther" movie was being praised to the heavens by critics. So I gave it a shot, couldn't get through the first twenty minutes. Unwatchable swill.

    As Tarantino observed - "I didn't go to film school, I went to films." What makes him one of the great filmmakers is quite simply his loving obsession with them.
